Places Of Maldene: Thïr Glomdäitaÿor

Okay, so first you ask what’s with the funky name. The funky name in question is the city-castle of the King. Not just any king, but thee King (notice I spelled it with a Capital “K”), the one guy trying to engineer his own counter-plot to that of Miro by recruiting few heros. Needless to say, his castle is a bit beyond the normal.

Let’s analyze the name of the place, because yes it actually means something (I do a lot of that, so sometimes you just have to watch out at how I start naming things). First that Prefix, “Thïr”. If you look into the Maldene dictionary (Volume 2 of the first novel) you should find that it is used to designate a truly great city, one both wealthy and powerful. Like if you were to stick all of Manhattan inside gigantic castle walls, then that castle-city would have earned a “Thïr”. It is a title used by the Great Human Kingdoms of long ago, but since their fall no city since has earned the right to use that title… Until now.

Then the rest of the name. You can do some looking through the Maldene dictonary again, but basically it means “Strong” (Glom), “pearly white” (Däe) and “free” (Taÿor). So the whole thing translates to “Great pearly white city of the strong and the free”, pointing to both its grandeur and rough physical appearance, and the nature of its inhabitants.

Okay, so what about the rests of it. Just what makes this place so special? Its King and the attitude he represents. Everyone everywhere is deathly afraid of Miro (and with good reason). Here. though, there is at least the spark of hope, that maybe for the first time that anyone knows of, people can take a stand. The fact that this is a place designed to not only be a self-contained metropolis, but to house some fifty-thousand troops as well, only reinforces that attitude as well as its grandeur. Gardens, marble statues painted in the colors of life, stone buildings rising up a hundred stories, as flights of griffons patrol the skies, and the Keep of the Royal Family itself being about the size of a more normal-sized lord’s castle- this is a palace and fortress, a place that will become the center of a coming war of truly stellar proportions. This is Thïr Glomdäitaÿor.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet.
