Monsters of Maldene

Okay, first this article isn’t about demons, just creatures of various types; I’ve just been looking for an excuse to show off that Maldene Tarot card.  At any rate, you’ve seen a few of Maldene’s races, some of its critters, and perhaps a dragon or two, not to mention the Treblors, but there are quite a few other types of creatures mentioned in the books that you have not yet seen… some of which are best left alone.

Like for instance, something called a ‘Nevik’.

A powerful form of undead, with black bones, claws, and what looks like a short scimitar made out of jagged-edged bone that can slice straight through a human torso.  Or they might just glare at you with their red glowing eyes and cause you to die from a distance.  Or worse yet, plunge their bare claw straight through your chest and make you one of their own.  Nasty critters that are found in service to their creator: the Olden God, Vold.  That alone should tell you m ore than you want to know about them.

A Pugen Ppwer Cat is a more natural-born creature, found in the  entertaining-yet-deadly jungles of Puj.  A land where that rock you’re sitting on might be a silicon-based life-form, or that little stream the source of a magic potion.  Nothing is too unusual for Puj, but of them all, the apex predator is definitely the Pugen Power Cat.  They generate an electrical field strong enough to kill, can leap thirty feet with claws bared, can bring down an ogre, and oh yeah, they have some psychic aptitude.  You see, they are as intelligent as humans and can communicate telepathically.  They’re also vicious and hunt in packs.  Something to stay well away from, and yet they are highly valued.  Why?  If taken as a cub and raised by a single individual, one will bond with that person, forming a permanent telepathic link. Now having a Pugen as your companion and bodyguard would seem gift enough, but there is something else:  A Pugen Power Cat emanates an anti-magic field immediately around it where the only one who’s magic works is that of the one to whom it is bonded. So imagine if you’re a wizard and you got one of these creatures bonded to you, that means that your’s is the only one who’s magic will work within 30 feet.  Neat, huh?  Of course, to get a cub means journeying to Puj, fighting your way through its jungles, then facing off an entire pack of the critters to steal one of their cubs…  Not easy.

I may have mentioned the danger of The Great Desert, but here is one of the reasons why it’s so dangerous.  The Sarka is my answer to Dune’s Sand Worm, only its rear portion divides into 4 segments that provide primary locomotion, in addition to the many tiny claw-like feet running down either side of its body.  Of course, if you happen to be a Destir, you can send out a telepathic summons for one and hang on under its top cowl while it ferries you beneath the desert sands.  When it travels thusly, that cowl is the only part of it that can be seen riding above the desert sand, looking much like a giant fin, which earns it the nickname of “sand shark”.

Next we have that dreaded creature used by Miro as his police force and enforcers, the Tezar.

They induce fear from their gaze, wield a great-sword in each hand, and can arm wrestle a hill giant and win.  Typical attack mode is to leap in from several yards away, slaughter whoever they land on or near, maybe bite off someone’s hand, then really get mean.  Most  people run from these things, more so since they tend to lead Miro’s troops.

Okay, so a Lamia dancing at a tavern in the middle of the Harbor of the World is not frightening at all, but I thought I’d end with something more pleasant, and besides I’ve been wanting to show off this one.  Have a scene that needs an exotic dancer?  Can’t do better than a Lamia.
