Maldene In Pictures– The Weather

The weather on a world as large as Maldene, with three moons no less, can be a bit tricky, to say the least, and deserves to qualify as a character in itself.  So, let’s start these highlights with something that’s already been mentioned: the infamous Funnel Storm.

Imagine all the worst features of a tornado with a hurricane, then add in the worst lightning storm that Mother Nature can manage flashing along the edge of the core funnel, and there you go.  Except that the winds of the funnel suck you straight up, spit you out across the upper atmosphere there to fall back down to a perimeter of about 10 miles or so around the funnel, then blow with hurricane-force back in towards the funnel again.  Basically a cement mixer.  At sea these are bad enough, but they can also occur over land given the right conditions… such as over a desert where they become horrendous sand-blasters.  Fortunately they only occur around the equator where conditions are perfect for their formation (the winds blow straight up at the Equator, and straight down at the poles).

Now you know why Sleems are built the way they are and why no one trusts anything less than a Sleem to cross the Equator in (with an all-Thirdocian crew, naturally).  It’s also one of the reasons why Destir feel quite secure against invaders in their deserts.

Yes, you are seeing true; that is a tornado running along on its side.  It’s called a Harrow Wind, and is found in tight spaces; ravines, fjords, and such.  Sucks in stuff at its front (trees, people, rocks), runs it around for a bit before spitting it out through its back side in much smaller pieces. If you see one, either quickly find a very deep cave or break out a teleport spell.

The Southern Wastelands (South Pole) is basically one big glacier, frozen winds blowing straight down from above, visibility near zero and temperature well below that.  There is, however, one anomaly; a channel that cuts straight across the middle of it.  An ice-free channel.  With warm waters.  In all that frozen land, there is a channel completely free of ice, connecting the oceans of one hemisphere with those of another.  Perfect shortcut, one might think, but your average superstitious sailor sees that and imagines all sorts of reasons to stay well away from it.  Pity, because only here is the sky clear enough to see magnificent Auroras high above.  A magnificent sight more so than your Northern Lights.

But Maldene has more than just the Southern Auroras, it has them over the North Pole as well.

Of course, finding the right location to view them from is a bit tricky, for the Northern Wastelands are surrounded by an impassibly high and rugged range of mountains.  The Auroras can only be viewed within these mountains.

Finally, there’s something that’s either a weather condition or anomaly:  Tedelnosho, the Great Whirlpool.

First off, just so it’s clear, that tiny white blot moving across the middle left of the screen is a full-sized ship, as the center of this whirlpool is over a  mile across, while the outer reaches of the Whirlpool’s never-ending rotation is about 1500 miles in radius, touching upon a couple of continents and the northern edge of the Sea of A Thousand Islands.  It’s been spinning around for all of recorded history, and what started it in the first place is a matter of conjecture.  As is rumor that its center can send one to other worlds.  There’s even an old story that Tedelnosho formed as the result of a battle between Miro and the first (and last) wizard who dared oppose him, their fight blasting away a portion of My-Thov and forming the Sea of A Thousand Islands in the process.

But that’s another (unconfirmed) story.
